Grad Sneznik

Snežnik Castle proudly stands at a strategic point on the edge of Loška valley where once Roman residence stood. The first owners - gentlemen Snežniški are mentioned for the first time in 13th century. The castle was later owned by aristocratic families Lamberg, Scheyer, Raumschissl, Eggenberg, Auersperg and Lichtenberg for centuries.

The castle was an important administrative center of this part of Inner in 17th century. The original building still has beautiful Renaissance and Baroque architectural elements. The current image of the castle and towers with walls dates back to the second half of the 19th century when it was bought as a summer and hunting residence of German family of Saxon princes Schönburg-Waldenburg.

Walking through four floors of the castle conjures up the atmosphere of a hundred and more years back in the history. Rooms are still furnished with authentic furniture and other equipment. Lounges and bedrooms of princes Herman and Ulrika, princess Anne and all the guests rooms are arranged in pleasant and comfortable style with many historical seating facilities with the original trim and ornamental tiles. Walls are decorated with family portraits, old photos and graphics. A special room is furnished in the Egyptian style as it was a gift from Egyptian officials. The pleasant atmosphere is created with an old piano, pool table and other small equipment.

The castle lies far away from noisy roads and thus presents an ideal location for excursions when travelling around the beautiful Karst. From there forests are expanding to the south all the way to the picturesque mountains Snežnik just next to Croatian border and towards east where the forest Kočevje flow into one of the last major European forests.
